Bali is described as the most enchanting travel and surfing destination in the whole world. And in February of this year I had the opportunity to find out if these words rang true.
They do!! |

I headed up a group that went there for two weeks - of mixed surfing ability and age, could the one destination suit the diversity within our party? Not only did it, but it surpassed our wildest expectations. From the moment we landed, the searing heat and heady spicy aroma signaled our arrival somewhere quite special. |
The drive to the hotel through narrow backstreets and scooter carnage opened up our eyes to world quite unlike our own.Wailin, Surf’s Up! instructor and Bali regular (this was his tenth winter there) took on the role of our guide. We boarded the Kijangs, similar to Shoguns, and headed for the first break Nusa Dua. A short boat ride across the lagoon to a 3ft clean and empty face awaited our arrival - what a start! We surfed until we could paddle no more, the warm water caressing our bodies as we paddled.
The next day and Serangan was the destination. A reef break with two waves either side of the deep water channel. On the left, a sweet left - and on the right, a wave twice as big called the Main Peak, which broke to the right. Fast and steep. This was to become our favourite break. We started on the left but by the end of our adventure had the right covered as well. |

Each morning we rose early to make the most of the light winds, coming back to the hotel to refuel. Some of our party surfed during lunchtime at Legian Beach, a 2 minute walk from the hotel. There were days when this beach break was something else and with the confidence gained surfing the reefs, the team were able to charge it with confidence. Others in our group stayed by the pool, enjoyed Balinese massages and long lunches soaking up the sun. In the afternoon we headed back to Serangan and surfed until either our arms gave up or it was too dark to see.
There were days when we interrupted our surfing with other activities - white water rafting, water parking and elephant riding were all popular. As was shopping - an experience in itself.
In summary - the best surfing destination I’ve ever been to - by far! My only regret? That I’d left it until I was 41 to go for the first time. Now I know why our instructors work with us in the summer and live in Bali in the winter. I totally get it.
